Prof. Koichi MAKIMURA, M.D. & Ph.D. is Chief of the Medical Mycology, Graduate School of Medicine, Teikyo University, Tokyo. He graduated from Tokyo Medical University in 1990, obtained M.D. then studied on the oncogenic virus at Tampa Bay Research Institute, Florida, USA, as Visiting Scientist. After obtained Ph.D., He started his studies on Medical Mycology at Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology from 1994 to 2012. From 2012, He moved to current affiliation. His research fields are general medical mycology especially diversity and taxonomy of pathogenic fungi and molecular diagnosis of mycoses. His focus has expanded to fungi related various health disorders in a closed manned environment and International Space Station (ISS) is one of his fields. He was First PI (2008) of Space Microbiology in Japanese ISS module, “KIBO”. On the zoonosis related points of view, zoological parks and their keeping animals (especially, Koalas) are also his research field and objects. He developed many molecular diagnostic systems for mycoses and recently, he also showed the application of some digital microscopic observation tools for pathogenic fungi.
